Makara Disgorging a Warrior
Architectural decoration. Late Xlth - early XIIth century Chành Lô style, Thu Thiên group. Brown sandstone. H. 94 cm, W 100.3 cm x 19.7 cm. Asian Art Museum of San Francisco Loan from The Christensen Fund, BL 77S1.

This makara resembles very much the one in Fig. 16. The major difference is that the headgear of the warrior in Fig. 16 is smooth, which may be due to a different state of completion. But the similarities between the two sculptures, their sizes, and their directions, strongly suggest that they may have been placed at opposite ends of the same monument.
